North Node and South Node: Your Soul Path in Astrology

The South Node is what you already master. The North Node is where your soul is growing. Here is how to read the Lunar Nodes in your chart.

A misty road at night lit by a row of lights

The North Node and South Node (the Lunar Nodes) are two opposite points in your birth chart where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path. In astrology the South Node describes what you already master and fall back on, sometimes interpreted as past-life gifts, while the North Node describes the unfamiliar qualities your soul is growing toward in this life. They always sit exactly opposite each other, so they are read as one axis: from comfort to growth.

What are the Lunar Nodes, astronomically?

The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5° compared to the Sun's path (the ecliptic). The two crossing points are the Nodes. Eclipses happen when a New or Full Moon falls near them, which is why the Nodes have long been linked to fate and turning points.

The Nodes move backwards through the zodiac and take about 18.6 years to complete a full cycle, spending roughly 18 months in each sign pair.

In the AstrologyBird Oracle

"What you already master is a gift, not a home."

"Your soul's path leads through what is still unfamiliar."

The goal is not to abandon the South Node. You bring its gifts with you on the way to the North Node.

The six nodal axes

Because the Nodes are always opposite, there are six sign axes, and each one can run in two directions. Here the first sign is the North Node.

  • North Node in Aries / South Node in Libra: from pleasing others to trusting your own will.

  • North Node in Libra / South Node in Aries: from going it alone to true partnership.

  • North Node in Taurus / South Node in Scorpio: from crisis and intensity to calm, simple stability.

  • North Node in Scorpio / South Node in Taurus: from holding on to comfort to embracing deep change.

  • North Node in Gemini / South Node in Sagittarius: from preaching big truths to curious listening.

  • North Node in Sagittarius / South Node in Gemini: from gathering facts to finding meaning and faith.

  • North Node in Cancer / South Node in Capricorn: from achievement and control to feeling and belonging.

  • North Node in Capricorn / South Node in Cancer: from emotional safety to taking public responsibility.

  • North Node in Leo / South Node in Aquarius: from blending into the group to shining as yourself.

  • North Node in Aquarius / South Node in Leo: from personal spotlight to serving the collective.

  • North Node in Virgo / South Node in Pisces: from dreaming and escaping to grounded, practical service.

  • North Node in Pisces / South Node in Virgo: from control and analysis to trust and surrender.

The houses show where in life this journey plays out. A North Node in the 10th house points the growth toward career and public life; in the 4th, toward home, family and inner foundations.

Your nodal return

Roughly every 18 to 19 years the Nodes return to their position in your birth chart: around ages 18–19, 37, 56 and 74. These years often bring choices that realign you with your path, such as leaving home, changing career or redefining what really matters.

How to work with your Nodes
  1. Find your nodal axis by sign and house.

  2. Write down your South Node skills. What do you do easily, perhaps too easily?

  3. Write down one small North Node step you can take this week.

  4. Notice resistance. Feeling awkward is often a sign you are on the right track.

  5. Draw the Soul Path spread in the AstrologyBird Oracle: where you come from, where you stand, where your soul is going.

Frequently asked questions

Is the North Node my life purpose? It is often called that. More precisely, it describes the direction of growth that brings a sense of fulfilment, rather than one specific job or goal.

Are the Nodes about past lives? Some astrologers read the South Node as past-life experience. You do not need to believe in reincarnation to use it: it also describes the patterns you learned early in this life.

What is the difference between the true node and the mean node? The mean node is an averaged position; the true node includes the Moon's small wobbles. They are usually within about 1.5° of each other.
