Shadow Work with Astrology: Chiron, Black Moon Lilith and Your Black Light

Your chart doesn't only show your light. Chiron, Lilith and your hard aspects show where your shadow lives, and where its hidden gift is waiting.

Shadow work is the practice of getting to know the parts of yourself you have hidden, rejected or never learned to see. In astrology, the clearest pointers to your shadow are Chiron (where you carry an old wound and can become a healer), Black Moon Lilith (the wild, exiled part of you that refused to be tamed), Pluto (where you meet power and transformation), and the challenging aspects in your chart. The aim is not to get rid of the shadow, but to find the gift inside it. At AstrologyBird we call that gift your Black Light.

What is shadow work?

The term "shadow" comes from the psychologist Carl Jung, who used it for the parts of the personality the conscious self does not identify with. These can be "negative" traits like envy or anger, but also gifts we were taught to hide: ambition, sensuality, sensitivity or power.

Shadow work means noticing these parts with curiosity instead of shame. Astrology can help because it gives you concrete places to look.

Chiron: the wounded healer

Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977. It takes about 50 years to circle the Sun. In mythology Chiron was a centaur and a great healer who could not heal his own wound.

In your chart, Chiron's sign and house show where you were hurt in a way that does not simply "go away", and where, through living with that wound, you develop wisdom you can offer others.

  • Chiron in the 1st house or in Aries: a wound around the right to exist and take up space.

  • Chiron in the 2nd house or in Taurus: a wound around self-worth and security.

  • Chiron in the 7th house or in Libra: a wound around relationships and being chosen.

  • Chiron in the 10th house or in Capricorn: a wound around achievement and being recognised.

Around age 50 most people have their Chiron return, when Chiron comes back to its birth position. It often brings old pain back to the surface, this time with the maturity to heal it.

Black Moon Lilith: the part of you that was exiled

Black Moon Lilith is not a planet. In most charts it is the lunar apogee: the point where the Moon is farthest from Earth in its orbit. It takes about nine years to move through all twelve signs.

Lilith is named after the figure from Jewish folklore who refused to be subordinate and was cast out. In your chart, Lilith shows where you have felt "too much", where you were shamed for your instincts, and where you hold a raw, untamed power.

  • Lilith in Leo: shame around wanting to be seen; a fierce, creative presence.

  • Lilith in Scorpio: taboos around sexuality, anger or depth; unshakeable inner power.

  • Lilith in Virgo: perfectionism as a cage; a body wisdom that knows what is right for you.

  • Lilith in the 10th house: a complicated relationship with authority; the courage to lead your own way.

The Black Light: the gift inside the shadow

At AstrologyBird, every oracle card has a shadow and a Black Light. Ordinary light shows what is on the surface. Black light (ultraviolet light) reveals what is hidden: invisible ink, patterns you could not see before. In the same way, your Black Light is what becomes visible when you look at your shadow honestly.

A few examples from the AstrologyBird Oracle:

  • Aries: behind the anger lives a fierce love for what is true.

  • Chiron: where you were hurt, you learned to heal.

  • Black Moon Lilith: the part of you that was exiled is coming home.

A simple astrological shadow-work practice
  1. Find your Chiron and Lilith by sign and house in your birth chart.

  2. Write down what each placement describes, without judging it.

  3. Ask: when did I first feel this? Often the theme goes back to childhood.

  4. Look for the gift. Ask what this wound or wildness has taught you that others do not know.

  5. Draw a card with the Light & Black Light spread: one card for what wants to shine, one for what wants to be seen.

  6. Be gentle. Shadow work can bring up strong emotions. If you are carrying trauma, combine it with support from a therapist or experienced practitioner.

Frequently asked questions

Is Black Moon Lilith a planet? No. It is a calculated point, usually the lunar apogee. Some charts show a "true" (osculating) and a "mean" Lilith; the mean version is the most commonly used.

Is Chiron negative in a chart? No. Chiron shows a sensitive area, but also your capacity for compassion and healing.

Can astrology replace therapy for shadow work? No. Astrology is a reflection tool. For trauma or mental health concerns, please work with a qualified professional.
